Doctor from RG Kar Hospital granted bail in hit-and-run that killed van driver on BT road

Dr. Debjit Biswas, a physician at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, was granted bail after being involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident on BT Road on Saturday, January 24. The accident occurred at approximately 6:30 PM when Dr. Biswas’s vehicle struck a van driven by Jagdish, resulting in the van driver’s death. The collision took place between Shyambazar and Sithi More on BT Road, a busy stretch in central Kolkata.

Following the accident, Dr. Biswas reportedly attempted to flee the scene. Witnesses stated that he hit another vehicle in the process of trying to escape. Dr. Biswas abandoned his car and fled on foot. Local police arrived at the scene shortly afterward and began an investigation into the incident. Dr. Biswas was later detained and questioned by the authorities before being granted bail by the Shyambazar court. The police filed a case of involuntary manslaughter against the doctor based on initial evidence and witness accounts.

During his questioning, Dr. Biswas explained that he had been working for 48 hours without rest before driving home on the day of the accident. He attributed the loss of control over his vehicle to fatigue and claimed that the accident was unintentional. The police report mentioned that Dr. Biswas cooperated with the investigation and stated that the collision was a mistake and not intentional.

The case has drawn public attention, with local residents expressing outrage over the incident. Some witnesses have raised concerns about the doctor's actions after the collision, particularly his attempt to flee.
